Elmer Kelton is one of the few Texas writers whose work will likely endure, particularly The Time It Never Rained. He was also a really nice man. I met him first when I was in graduate school and reading The Good Old Boys for a Southwest literature course. He was really gracious and I think he enjoyed signing my dog-eared copy of the book full of yellow underlining.
Here's a really nice remembrance of him.
